The permanent residence permit is a residency document that allows foreign citizens to reside in Portugal indefinitely.

Despite having no expiration date, the residence permit must be renewed every five years or whenever there is a change in the personal identification details recorded on it.

To apply for a permanent residence permit, the following requirements are necessary: to have held a temporary residence permit for at least 5 years; not to have been convicted to a sentence or sentences in the last 5 years of residence in Portugal that, individually or cumulatively, exceed one year of imprisonment, even if the execution of the sentence has been suspended; to have means of subsistence; to have available accommodation; to prove basic knowledge of Portuguese.

The application for a permanent residence permit involves the payment of a fee, and if all requirements are met, the application should be decided within a period of 30 to 90 days.
