The application for renewal of a temporary residence permit must be requested by the interested persons up to 30 days before the expiration of its validity.
The renewal request is made at the service centers of the Foreigners and Borders Service (SEF) by appointment (by telephone, e-mail or online) and, if the residence permit meets the conditions for the purpose, it can also be made automatically, in the personal area on the SEF portal.
The temporary residence permit is valid for a period of two years as of the date of issue of the respective title and is renewable for successive periods of three years.
After five years have elapsed, it is possible to submit a request for a permanent residence permit.
The permanent residence permit, when granted, is issued for five years and has no limit of validity. The residence permit must, however, be renewed every five years or whenever there is a change in the identification elements registered on it.
